Respiratory Clinic

We have a Respiratory Nurse, who specialises in Asthma and COPD. These clinics include a number of different services such as lung function tests, reviews and general acute chest problems. These appointments can either be face to face or over the telephone and you will receive a letter from the surgery when you are due for your review. These clinics are on: 

•  Tuesday all day, Wednesday all day, Friday AM at Sketty Surgery.

SCRIPT SWITCH VENTOLIN TO SALAMOL Meter dose inhaler.

• You may notice the emergency treatment for your asthma has changed from Ventolin to salamol. This is the exact same drug in a different CFC device.
• The Ventolin device has the highest carbon footprint and to improve this, the switch to salamol cfc free device has been made.
• There is an NHS wide goal to reduce the proportion of high global warming potential inhalers from > 70% to < 20% by 2025 – help us do our part.

• Ventolin evohaler contains 28kg of C02 per inhaler
• Salamol evohaler contains 10kg of C02 per inhaler
• Dry powder inhalers contain <1kg C02 per inhaler

At your next review please discuss switching to a dry powder device!

In the last 4 weeks we have reduced the issuing of Ventolin inhaler devices from 390 pumps to 275.

 This is equivalent to 2070less kg C02 – which is great news!

Travel Vaccinations

If you require any vaccinations relating to foreign travel you need to make an appointment with the practice nurse to discuss your travel arrangements. This will include which countries and areas within countries that you are visiting to determine what vaccinations are required. A travel risk assessment is now mandatory for all travel appointments.

Patients can either print the form or ask at reception for a copy, once completed this must be brought to the appointment for completion by the clinician.

It is important to make this initial appointment as early as possible - at least 6 weeks before you travel - as a second appointment will be required with the practice nurse to actually receive the vaccinations. Some of these vaccines have to be ordered as they are not always an in stock vaccine. Your second appointment needs to be at least 2 weeks before you travel to allow the vaccines to work.

Some travel vaccines are ordered on a private prescription and these incur a charge over and above the normal prescription charge. This is because not all travel vaccinations are included in the services provided by the NHS.

For some vaccines to work properly, they have to be given more than once.

This is why we will invite your little one for their routine childhood vaccinations at eight weeks old, 12 weeks, 16 weeks, 12 to 13 months and again at around three years old.

By bringing your child in for vaccination EVERY time they are invited, you are ensuring they have the best protection possible against nasty illnesses such as meningitis, measles, mumps, whooping cough, polio and more.

Some of these diseases are rarely found in the UK these days or have not been seen here for some time. This is because lots of children are vaccinated against them.

How do I know if my child is up to date with their vaccinations?

If you’re not sure if your child is up to date, check their ‘red book’, which is also known as the Personal Child Health Record.

The book contains a list of the vaccinations they should have and at what age they should have them.

Each vaccine they receive will be recorded in the book.

Smear Clinic/Women's wellness

Please telephone either surgery site to book in with one of our practice nurses. As a preventative measure, all women aged 25 years and over should have a smear test once every five years. This is a simple procedure and takes only a few minutes. We have Nurses fully trained in the procedure and should you have any concerns beforehand or would like some advice, please contact the surgery and ask for a telephone call with one of our nurses.

Coils, Implants & HRT

We have a few female doctors who specialise in Women's health and wellbeing and who offer services such as coil insertions and removals and implant insertions and removals, as well as HRT counselling.

An ‘Easy Read’ booklet about NHS cervical screening (smear) tests in Wales is now available online. The updated digital version of the booklet is called ‘About your cervical screening (smear) test’ and it can be found on the CSW website, in the information resources section. The resource, available in English and Welsh, was developed in partnership with service users and Learning Disability Wales (LDW) in 2022. It takes the reader through the cervical screening (smear) test process, using simple words and pictures. The layout makes it particularly suitable for people with learning disabilities, those for whom English and Welsh are not their first languages, individuals with a low health literacy level and other under served groups.

These are available each autumn for people over 50 and those with certain medical conditions such as chronic (long-term) chest problems, diabetes and heart disease.

Joint Injections

There are doctors in the practice able to provide more specialist care. After routine assessment, if appropriate, the doctor can offer joint injections to relieve discomfort.

Family Planning Advice

All the Doctors and Nurses will be pleased to offer free advice on any aspect of family planning including contraception and fertility counselling.

Learning Difficulties

Your voice advocacy members have produced a short video explaining what people with learning disabilities can expect at their annual health check.  This gives some examples of some of the things that might happen, having your tummy felt, your breasts or testicles checked and your weight and height measured. 

 The video also gives examples of some of the questions that might be asked and acknowledges how people might feel scared or anxious about having the health check.  This is a really important video which should break down some of the barriers experienced by people with learning disabilities in experiencing health care and the aim is to improve uptake of the health check and reduce health inequalities.

Minor Operations

The Doctors carry out minor surgery in our well-equipped treatment room. Such surgery includes the removal of cysts and warts and is usually arranged in consultation with either Dr Johns or Dr Snelling. There is often a waiting list for this service so please contact the Killay branch for any further information.

Non-NHS Work

Insurance, pre-employment, driving and other medicals, private certificates, passports, insurance claims etc - please arrange via the Receptionist. Your Doctor will be pleased to perform these services for you, but as the NHS does NOT cover them you will be charged a fee that is recommended by the BMA. PLEASE BE PREPARED TO PAY AT THE TIME; a list of fees is displayed in the waiting room, or the Receptionist will advise you of the cost when you telephone for an appointment. Smoking Cessation Service

We now hold a Smoking Cessation Service from Sketty surgery on Wednesdays 12-2pm.  Run by a Stop Smoking Wales counsellor, covering behavioural therapy and offering Nicotine replacement therapies to help you quit.  Also offering lung function and Carbon Monoxide testing.
